Short answer: often, yes. The Disability Support Pension (DSP) is one of the Centrelink payments lenders are most comfortable with, because it's ongoing and stable. Renting doesn't rule you out either. The key question is whether the repayments fit comfortably around your rent and living costs.
How lenders look at DSP income
- Many lenders accept the DSP as income, and some accept it as your only income.
- Related payments, such as Rent Assistance or a Mobility Allowance, may or may not be counted, depending on the lender.
- Other income, such as part-time work or a partner's income on a joint application, can widen your options.
How renting affects your application
Renting is completely normal, and lenders see it all the time. What they look at is:
- How much of your income goes on rent. On a fixed income, rent is usually the biggest expense, so it has the biggest influence on how much you can borrow.
- A steady rental history. Paying rent on time, ideally shown in your bank statements, shows you manage commitments reliably.
- Stability. Having lived at the same address for a while helps, although it isn't essential.
Keeping it affordable
- Choose a reliable, sensibly priced car. Running costs matter as much as the repayment.
- A smaller loan over a shorter term keeps total interest down.
- If you need a modified vehicle, ask about funding support first. Depending on your circumstances, the NDIS or state schemes may help with vehicle modifications.
Documents to have ready
- A Centrelink income statement from myGov
- Recent bank statements showing your payments and rent
- Your lease or a rental ledger (helpful, not always required)
- ID and driver licence
Watch out for
Avoid lenders that approve anyone regardless of income. High fees can make a modest car very expensive. For small amounts, community No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) providers may be an option. If existing debts are a worry, the National Debt Helpline (1800 007 007) is free.
