You Have Questions? We've got Answers

My visa expires in 12 months. Can I still qualify?

YES! However do note that 12 months is the absolute minimum amount of time left to be able to qualify for a car loan. If you require finance, please fill in our quick quote ASAP to get you on the road before time runs out.

Lets say I had 21 months left on my visa. Can my loan term go up to 21 months as well?

Good news is, doing an "odd" number month loan term is possible, however the rule of thumb is lenders will usually want the loan terminating 1 month before your visa expires. For this example, a lender will typically only go up to 20 months.

I just landed in Australia today. Can I qualify for a loan?

Yes! If you are on a skilled visa, have an employment contract ready to go, and you are in a skilled role, lenders can approve you on day 1 of landing in Australia. Just note most lenders will only settle your loan when it's your 1st day in your job (and the lender usually calls your employer to confirm this as well)

I'm not in Australia yet, however I have my flight booked and I'm coming over soon. Do I qualify?

The best thing you can do here is fill in the quick quote below to start your application, where one of our brokers can advise you up-front where you stand. The moment you land in Australia, we can submit your application and get you moving quickly. Just also note, the lender can approve you in Australia on day 1, but usually won't settle until it's your first day in your new job.

Can Nurses on a 491 Visa Get Car Finance in Australia?

Short answer: Often, yes. Many lenders will consider a registered nurse on a subclass 491 visa, but they look closely at how much time is left on the visa, how your employment is set up and how your Australian credit history looks. The loan term is often capped at the time remaining on your visa.

How lenders view the 491 visa

The Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) subclass 491 visa runs for five years and is a pathway to permanent residence through the subclass 191 visa. Lenders treat it as a temporary visa, so the first question is usually how long you have left. Someone with four years remaining has far more options than someone with eight months left.

Because you are expected to live and work in a designated regional area, lenders may also ask where you live and work. If you plan to move, mention it early so the application stays consistent.

What lenders look at for nurses

  • Employment type: Permanent full-time or part-time roles with a public or private health service are usually easiest to verify. Casual and agency nurses can still be considered, but lenders often want to see several months in the role or a longer history in nursing.
  • How your pay is calculated: Nursing pay often includes penalty rates, shift allowances and overtime. Some lenders use your base rate only, while others average your year-to-date earnings. Your year-to-date figure on a recent payslip matters.
  • AHPRA registration: Current registration supports the case that your income will continue.
  • Credit history: If you are new to Australia, your credit file may be thin. That isn't a black mark, but some lenders want a deposit or a smaller loan until you have a history here.
  • Living costs and debts: Rent, overseas family support and existing debts all count against what you can borrow.

Documents to have ready

  • Passport and visa grant notice (lenders may check your visa status on VEVO)
  • Australian driver licence, or an overseas licence your state accepts
  • Two or three recent payslips and your employment contract or letter of offer
  • Bank statements, usually the last three months
  • Evidence of AHPRA registration
  • Details of the car you want, if you have found one

What can help your application

Factor Why it matters
More time left on your visa Allows a longer term and lower repayments
A deposit Reduces the amount the lender has at risk
A modest, newer vehicle Easier to secure and usually easier to approve
Clean bank statements No dishonours, gambling or payday loans

Keep the loan term in mind. Example only: $25,000 over 4 years at 10% p.a. is about $634 a month. If your visa has only two years left, the same loan over two years would cost much more each month, which may push it beyond what you can service. The broker can explain how different lenders handle this.

Things to watch

Avoid putting in several applications in a short time. Each one can leave an enquiry on your credit file for five years. Be careful with balloon payments too. They lower the monthly repayment, but the lump sum falls due at the end, possibly around the time your visa situation is changing. Check your visa conditions on the Department of Home Affairs website if anything is unclear.
