Short answer: yes, casual and part-time workers can get car finance. Lenders just want evidence your income is consistent, and they'll usually average it if your hours vary.
Permanent part-time vs casual
- Permanent part-time: treated much like full-time, just on a lower income. Past probation is ideal.
- Casual: lenders often want around six months or more with the current employer, or a longer history in the same industry.
How variable hours are assessed
Lenders commonly look at your year-to-date income on a recent payslip, or average several months of pay, rather than taking your best week. Seasonal peaks may be discounted.
What helps
- Consistent hours shown in payslips and bank statements
- A long history in the same industry
- A second income source, or a joint application
- A deposit and a modest loan
- Clean bank statements
Documents
- Recent payslips, ideally showing year-to-date figures
- Your income statement from myGov for the last financial year
- Bank statements
- A letter from your employer confirming ongoing hours (helpful)
