Short answer: There's no single caravan loan rate. What you're offered depends mostly on your credit history, whether the loan is secured against the van, the van's age, the loan term and whether you're buying from a dealer or privately. Comparing the comparison rate, not just the headline rate, is the most reliable way to judge an offer.
What actually drives the rate you're offered
Lenders price caravan loans on risk. The main things they weigh up are:
- Your credit file. Recent missed payments, defaults or a lot of new credit enquiries usually push the rate up or narrow your choice of lenders.
- Secured or unsecured. A secured loan uses the caravan as security, so it's often priced lower than an unsecured personal loan. Many lenders only secure against vans under a certain age.
- Age and value of the van. Newer vans from a dealer are simpler to value. Older vans, custom builds and imports can be harder to secure.
- Loan term and balloon. A longer term or a balloon lowers the regular repayment but usually increases the total interest you pay.
- Deposit. Putting money down reduces the amount the lender has at risk. It isn't always required, but it can widen your options.
- Income and existing commitments. Lenders must check you can afford the repayments without hardship, so your budget matters as much as your credit score.
Why headline rates can mislead
An advertised rate is usually the best-case figure for the strongest applicants. The comparison rate adds most fees and charges into a single percentage, which makes it easier to compare like with like. Also check the establishment fee, monthly account fee, early payout fee and any balloon amount. Moneysmart has a clear explanation of comparison rates and a loan calculator on moneysmart.gov.au.
How much does the rate change the repayment?
The figures below are examples only, not quotes or current rates. They show how a couple of percentage points changes the cost of a $50,000 caravan loan over 7 years with no balloon.
| Example rate (p.a.) | Approx. monthly repayment | Approx. total interest |
|---|---|---|
| 9% | $804 | $17,574 |
| 11% | $856 | $21,914 |
Example only. Fees are not included and your rate will depend on the lender and your circumstances.
Things that may help you get a better offer
- Get a free copy of your credit report before applying and fix any errors.
- Avoid lodging several applications at once. Each one can leave an enquiry on your file for five years.
- Have your documents ready: recent payslips or tax returns, bank statements, ID and details of the van. Our caravan loan documents checklist covers the usual list.
- Think about the term. A shorter term costs more each month but less overall. See caravan loan terms explained.
- If you're using a balloon, have a plan for paying or refinancing it at the end.
Dealer finance vs going through a broker
Dealer finance can be convenient, but it's usually drawn from a limited panel of lenders. A licensed broker can compare a wider range of lenders, including banks, credit unions and non-bank lenders, and explain the total cost before you sign. Either way, read the contract and the fees before you commit.
