Short answer: often, yes. Probation makes some lenders cautious, but many will consider an application from someone in a permanent public sector role during probation, particularly if you've worked in a similar job before. A contract or temporary role is a different story.
Why probation matters to lenders
During probation, either side can end the employment with short notice. A lender lending over five or more years wants confidence your income will continue. So instead of asking only "are you on probation?", good lenders look at the whole picture: what kind of role it is, your work history, and how affordable the loan is.
What helps your application
- A permanent (ongoing) role. An ongoing position with an Australian, state or local government employer is viewed more favourably than a fixed-term contract or labour-hire placement.
- Same industry, continuous work. If you moved from one nursing, teaching or admin role to another with no gap, many lenders treat that as continuity rather than a fresh start.
- At least one payslip from the new employer. Some lenders will work from an employment contract alone, but most want to see the income landing.
- A clean credit file and sensible loan size. Probation plus a stretched budget is a tough combination. Probation plus a comfortable repayment is much easier.
What makes it harder
- A fixed-term contract ending before the loan would be well underway
- A career change into a completely new field
- Gaps in employment right before the new role
- Recent missed repayments or defaults
Documents to have ready
- Your letter of offer or employment contract showing the role is ongoing, your salary and your start date
- Your most recent payslip(s)
- Evidence of your previous employment (payslips, a separation certificate or a group certificate) if you've changed jobs recently
- Recent bank statements and ID
Should you wait until probation ends?
If you don't need the car urgently, waiting until you've passed probation (often three to six months in the public sector) will open up more lenders and can improve the rate you're offered. If you need a car to get to work now, a broker can tell you which lenders are comfortable with probation so you don't collect unnecessary declines.
