A new job that needs a car creates time pressure, and time pressure leads to expensive decisions. Here's a fast but sensible plan.
Day 1: Get your documents together
- Signed employment contract or letter of offer
- Your latest payslip from the previous job, and the new one when it arrives
- Driver licence and bank statements
Day 1–2: Get pre-approved
Apply once, through a broker who knows which lenders accept new starters, rather than to several lenders yourself. Pre-approval gives you a budget and lets you move fast when you find the car.
Day 2–5: Choose the right car
- Reliable over flashy: this car is for getting to work.
- Check the lender's vehicle age rules.
- Get an insurance quote before you commit.
- Run a PPSR check on any private sale.
Avoid these traps
- Signing "easy approval" finance with very high fees because you're rushed
- Letting add-ons get bundled into the loan
- Buying more car than you need on the promise of your new salary before you've been paid
Stop-gap options
If finance takes a little longer, consider a short-term rental, car share or car subscription for the first week or two. It's cheaper than a bad five-year loan.
