- Private sale buyers: buying a used float from another owner
- Self-employed buyers: including low-doc options where tax returns are behind
Ways to finance a horse float
How a float is financed depends mainly on who's buying it and how it will be used:
| Option | Usually suits | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer secured loan | Personal or hobby use | The float is security for the loan. Lenders may limit the age of the float and ask for its VIN and build details. |
| Unsecured personal loan | Older or lower-priced floats | No security over the float, so age matters less, but rates are often higher. |
| Chattel mortgage | Equine businesses with an ABN | The business owns the float. Interest and depreciation may be claimable for the business-use portion. |
| Hire purchase or lease | Businesses that prefer to own at the end, or not at all | Ownership and tax treatment differ from a chattel mortgage, so check with your accountant. |
Checks before you buy a float
A float is a heavy trailer once it's loaded with horses, so the finance is only part of the picture:
- Towing capacity: make sure your vehicle can legally tow the float's loaded weight, horses and gear included.
- Build plate and compliance: check the float's ATM (aggregate trailer mass) and compliance plate, and that brakes suit the weight.
- Registration and transfer: rules, fees and stamp duty vary by state, so check with your state transport authority.
- Money owing: on a private sale, confirm the float isn't still under finance before you pay.
- Running costs: budget for insurance, registration, tyres and servicing on top of repayments.
If you're buying a tow vehicle at the same time, tell the broker. Lenders assess both repayments together, and it can be simpler to plan them as one conversation.

- Recent bank statements
- Details of existing debts, including any car loan for your tow vehicle

Common questions
Can I finance a used horse float?
Often, yes. Many lenders finance used floats from dealers and private sellers, although some limit how old the float can be. They'll usually want the VIN and confirmation there's no money owing on it.
Can I finance a float with living quarters?
Usually, yes. Larger goosenecks and floats with living areas cost more, so lenders look closely at your income, existing debts and the float's value. Your broker can tell you which lenders suit.
Can my equine business claim the float?
If the float is used in a business, you can generally claim depreciation and interest for the business-use portion. How much you can claim depends on your circumstances, so check with your accountant.
Can I finance the float and a tow vehicle together?
Sometimes. Some lenders will consider both in one application, while others treat them as separate loans. Either way, both repayments are assessed against your income.
Does enquiring affect my credit score?
No. Filling in our enquiry form isn't a credit application. A credit check only happens if you choose to go ahead with an application through the broker.
