The problem with financing technology
Most IT equipment is worth a fraction of its price within a few years, and many businesses replace laptops and servers on a three-to-four-year cycle. That changes the maths:
- A loan term longer than the useful life of the gear can leave you still paying for equipment you've already replaced.
- Lenders know resale value falls quickly, so used IT is rarely financed and terms tend to be shorter than for vehicles or machinery.
- Software, licences, installation and cabling are "soft" costs with no resale value. They are often included only as part of a hardware package, or need stronger financials.
Rental and lease vs ownership
| Option | Who owns it | Often suits |
|---|---|---|
| Rental or operating-style lease | The rental provider | Laptops, desktops and anything you will refresh. Many agreements let you upgrade mid-term or return at the end. |
| Finance lease | The lessor, with a residual | Servers and AV with a predictable life. Lease payments are generally deductible. |
| Chattel mortgage | Your business | Long-life items such as furniture, signage hardware or AV you will keep for years |
| Hire purchase | You, after the final payment | Businesses that want to own the gear at the end of the term |
At the end of a rental or lease, the usual choices are to return the equipment, upgrade to new gear on a fresh agreement, extend, or buy it. Read what each option costs before you sign, because exit and buyout terms vary.
With a chattel mortgage your business owns the equipment, so it can generally claim interest and depreciation, and a GST-registered business may claim the GST credit upfront. Small businesses with turnover under $10 million can use the instant asset write-off for eligible assets costing less than $20,000 each, which covers many individual laptops and screens. Ask your accountant how this applies to a bulk purchase.
Low doc or full doc? Smaller technology packages can sometimes be approved on low doc terms for established ABN holders. Larger fit-outs with significant soft costs usually need full financials.

Common questions
Is it better to rent or buy laptops?
If you replace laptops every few years, rental or a lease often fits better because the agreement can end when the gear is due for replacement. If you keep equipment until it wears out, buying through a chattel mortgage may cost less overall.
Can software and installation be financed?
Sometimes, usually when they're part of a package with hardware. Because software and labour can't be resold, lenders limit how much of a deal they can make up, so ask for an itemised quote.
Can I upgrade before the agreement ends?
Some rental and lease agreements include upgrade options, often by rolling the remaining balance into a new agreement. Check the cost of doing this before you sign.
Can a new business finance IT equipment?
Some lenders will consider newer businesses, often with smaller limits, a deposit or a director's guarantee. Your broker can tell you which lenders fit.
Does enquiring affect my credit score?
No. Filling in our enquiry form isn't a credit application. A credit check only happens if you choose to go ahead with an application through the broker.
