How lenders view waste and recycling equipment
Waste equipment ranges from very standard to highly specialised, and that shapes how lenders assess it:
| Asset | How lenders tend to view it |
|---|---|
| Hook-lift, skip and tipper trucks | Common truck chassis with a good resale market. Generally the most straightforward. |
| Rear- and side-loader garbage trucks | Specialised bodies with fewer buyers. Lenders look closely at the contracts behind them. |
| Skip bins, wheelie bins and hook-lift bins | Lots of small, low-value items. Often financed as part of a truck package. |
| Compactors and balers | Standard models resell reasonably well; site installation adds soft cost. |
| Shredders, screens and processing plant | High value and specialised, sometimes imported. Expect closer questions, valuations or a deposit. |
Contracts matter
Much of this industry runs on contracts: council collection tenders, commercial collection agreements, or offtake arrangements for recycled material. Lenders like to see where the revenue comes from and how long it runs. Ideally the loan term lines up with the contract term, or you can show a history of renewals. A contract won but not yet started can support an application, but lenders will want the signed agreement.
Loan structures
- Chattel mortgage: your business owns the asset. It can generally claim interest and depreciation, and a GST-registered business may claim the GST credit upfront.
- Finance lease: the lessor owns it and the lease payments are generally deductible.
- Hire purchase: ownership passes to you with the final payment.
- Rental: sometimes used for compactors and balers placed at customer sites.
Small businesses with turnover under $10 million can use the instant asset write-off for eligible assets costing less than $20,000 each, which may cover individual bins or a small baler. Low doc options may suit established, GST-registered operators; larger plant and new contracts usually need full financials.

Common questions
Can I finance bins along with a truck?
Often, yes. Bins are low-value items on their own, so many lenders prefer to include them in a package with the truck rather than finance them separately.
Will a new council or commercial contract help my application?
It can. A signed contract shows where repayments will come from. Lenders will usually want to see the agreement itself, its term and how it is priced.
Can I finance imported recycling plant?
Some lenders will, though specialised or imported plant has fewer resale buyers. Expect to provide detailed quotes, shipping and installation costs, and possibly a deposit.
Can I finance a used garbage truck?
Many lenders will finance used trucks from dealers or private sellers. The age of the chassis and the condition of the body both matter.
Does enquiring affect my credit score?
No. Filling in our enquiry form isn't a credit application. A credit check only happens if you choose to go ahead with an application through the broker.
